To engage Grade 3 students in an English lesson by stimulating their imagination and interest in storytelling.
Begin the lesson by introducing the “Magical Box” to the class. Place the box in front of the students but keep it closed.
“Good morning, everyone! Today, I have something very special for you all. This is my Magical Box! Inside, it holds a surprise that could take us on an adventure. But first, we need to do something really important!”
Invite a few students to come up and guess what could be inside the box. Encourage creativity and wild ideas (e.g., “Maybe it’s a dragon’s tooth or a treasure map!”).
“Great ideas! But, to see what’s truly inside, we need to first write a letter to the magic of the box. The letter should describe the adventure you wish to go on!”
Hand out blank sheets of paper and colored markers. Instruct students to write a short letter describing their dream adventure. Prompt them with ideas:
Once they finish writing, have them fold their letters and place them in envelopes. Students can decorate their envelopes using the markers.
“You can think of your envelope as a secret treasure chest that holds the key to your adventure!”
Gather the students around the Magical Box. Explain that you will now “send” their letters into the box. With all the letters inside, slowly open the box to reveal something simple yet magical—like glitter or a fun prop that relates to exploration.
“Every adventure starts with a dream! Just like your letters, today we’ll dive into stories and learn how to create magical tales of our own. Let’s begin our journey into the wonderful world of storytelling!”
From this exciting start, transition into the primary lesson by discussing the elements of a story such as characters, setting, and plot, linking back to their letter-writing experience.
This creative beginning introduces storytelling concepts in a fun and engaging way, setting a positive tone for the rest of the English lesson!
