Begin by asking students if they have ever split a pizza or sandwich with someone. What happens when each person has an unequal amount? introduce the term "fractions" and explain that a fraction represents a part of a whole.
Explain to the students how to identify the different parts of a fraction (numerator and denominator) and how they relate to each other. Show examples with visual aids, such as fraction circles or blocks. Teach them how to represent fractions on a number line.
Provide the students with fraction problems to solve using manipulatives and by drawing them on the board. Encourage them to simplify the fractions if possible.
Hand out a worksheet with fraction problems for homework.
Review the topics covered in the lesson and have students share their homework results. Ask students what they learned about fractions and how they can use this knowledge in their daily lives.
Complete the worksheet with fraction problems provided. Rewrite any unsimplified fractions in their simplest form.
