The objective of this lesson is to introduce the concept of multiplication to Year 2 students. Today we will learn how to count and multiply numbers.
To begin this lesson, you'll need round, colored tiles or blocks and a set of multiplication flashcards. Optional materials include a multiplication chart and a whiteboard to write examples.
Let us start with an activity called "Multiplying Tiles". Instruct each student to choose any two colors from the tiles provided. They will then count the number of tiles used for each color. For example, one student may have 3 green tiles and 5 yellow tiles. Another student may have 2 blue tiles and 7 red tiles.
After counting the tiles, ask the students to combine the two colors while keeping their respective numbers separate. For instance, the first student would put the 3 green tiles with the 5 yellow tiles. They would then count the new total.
Explain to the students that multiplication is the same as counting repeated groups of the same amount. Give examples of when we might use multiplication in real life.
Multiplication is an important skill in Mathematics. Today we learned how to count and multiply numbers. With practice, we will become experts at multiplication!
