Introduction (3 minutes)
Today we are going to learn about money! Money is something we use every day to buy things we need and want. What are some things you have bought with money? Let's make a list on the board.
Identifying Money (7 minutes)
- Show students different denominations of money and ask them to identify them.
- Ask questions like: What is the name of this coin/bill? What color is it? How much is it worth?
- After discussing each denomination, have students sort the money into piles based on the value.
Addition and Subtraction with Money (10 minutes)
- Give students different amounts of money and ask them to add or subtract them.
- For example, if a student has 3 quarters and 2 dimes, ask them to add all of the coins together to get the total amount.
- For subtraction, give a student a certain amount and ask them how much money they would have left after buying something.
- Encourage the use of mental math or a calculator if needed.
The Value of Savings (5 minutes)
- Discuss with the class the concept of saving money.
- Ask questions like: Why is it important to save money? What are some things you can save money for?
- Introduce the concept of budgeting and explain how it helps us make sure we have enough money for everything we need and want.
Conclusion (5 minutes)
- Have students complete a worksheet on identifying and adding/subtracting money.
- Review the importance of money and how it plays a role in our everyday lives.
