Objectives:

Materials:
- Whiteboard and markers
- Picture of a scene {The image of a beach on a sunny day with people playing in the sand and waves.} (or project on a screen)
- Paper and pencil for each student
Introduction (5 minutes):
- Ask students what a descriptive sentence is and if they can give an example. Write down their answers on the whiteboard.
- Explain that a descriptive sentence is a sentence that uses words to paint a picture in the reader's mind.
- Show the picture of the beach and ask the students what they notice in the picture. Write down their responses on the whiteboard.
Main Activity (20 minutes):
- Explain to the students that they will be writing descriptive sentences about the beach picture using sensory details (sight, sound, taste, touch, and smell) to make the picture come alive in the reader's mind.
- Give examples of descriptive sentences using sensory details such as: "The salty smell of the ocean fills my nose as I listen to the sound of crashing waves."
- Have students write three descriptive sentences using sensory details about the beach picture.
- Circulate around the room to assist students as needed.
Conclusion (5 minutes):
- Have students share one of their descriptive sentences with the class.
- Discuss the importance of descriptive sentences in writing and how they can help bring a story to life.
- Assign homework to write a short paragraph describing a picture of their choice using descriptive sentences with sensory details.
