As a teacher, it is common for us to identify our skills, strengths, and weaknesses as educators. However, it can be difficult to see ourselves in a different light and understand our whole being. To challenge myself, I have spent some time reflecting on my story and how it affects my teaching.
Growing up, I struggled with a learning disability that made school difficult for me. However, I found that with the right support and individualized attention, I could succeed. This experience has shaped who I am as an educator. I strive to create an inclusive classroom where all students feel valued and understood. I recognize that every student has a unique learning style and that it is my job to find what works for each of them.
I find that my story and who I am as an educator can change depending on the narrative I am trying to serve. For example, when talking to parents at the beginning of the school year, I often emphasize my experience working with students who have learning disabilities. I want parents to know that I am equipped to support their child and provide a personalized learning plan.
On the other hand, when presenting at a professional development workshop for colleagues, I may focus more on my experience with differentiated instruction. I want to share what I have learned about how to create a classroom environment that meets the needs of all learners.
Recently, I had a student who was struggling in my class. They seemed disengaged and uninterested in the material. I needed to find a way to connect with them and help them to succeed. I remembered my own struggles as a student and recognized that this student might feel like they didn't belong in school.
I took the time to have a one-on-one conversation with the student and learned that they were dealing with some personal issues at home. I listened and provided emotional support, while also working with them to create a personalized learning plan that took their needs and interests into account. By valuing this student as an individual and recognizing their struggles, I was able to help them to flourish in my classroom.
Identifying my whole being as an educator has helped me to better understand my students and tailor my teaching to meet their needs. By recognizing my own experiences and stories, I am better equipped to create an inclusive and supportive classroom environment.
