Welcome students to another exciting math lesson! Have you ever enjoyed some delicious popcorn and shared it with your friend? How about we extend that fun and learn how to subtract fractions using popcorns!
Before we begin, let's recall what fractions are. Fractions are a part of a whole or a group. We use fractions to represent how much of a whole we have. For example, if we have two red apples out of four total apples, we can write it as:
2/4 apples are red.
Now, let's move on to subtracting fractions. When we subtract fractions, we are taking away a part from the whole.
For example, let's imagine we have a giant bowl of popcorn with 10 pieces. If we eat 3 pieces of popcorn, how many pieces are left in the bowl?
We can represent this using fractions:
10/10 (whole bowl) - 3/10 (pieces we ate) = 7/10 (pieces left in the bowl).
Now, let's practice subtracting fractions of popcorns using some exciting exercises.
