Academic Subject: History

Grade level: Year/Grade 10 (Age 14-16)

Length of Lesson: 30 minutes

Objective:

Students will be able to understand the concept of the four humours in ancient medical practices and how these ideas have impacted modern medicine.

Materials Needed:

Introduction (5 minutes):

Begin the lesson by explaining to students that medical practices have evolved throughout history and continue to do so. Ask students if they have ever heard of the four humours and if they know what they are. Give them a brief overview of the concept of the four humours and explain how they were used in ancient medical practices.

The Four Humours (10 minutes):

Provide students with a PowerPoint presentation describing the four humours: blood, phlegm, yellow bile, and black bile. Explain the characteristics of each humour and how they were believed to affect the body. Give examples of how these humours were used to diagnose and treat illnesses.

Historical Significance (10 minutes):

Discuss with students the historical significance of the four humours. Explain how this concept was developed by ancient doctors, particularly by Hippocrates and Galen. Discuss how this concept was used for centuries and how it impacted medical practices of the time. Also discuss how these ideas eventually evolved and were replaced by modern medical practices.

Modern Day Significance (5 minutes):

Explain to students how the concept of the four humours still has an impact on modern day medicine. Discuss how the four humours inspired the development of modern medical practices such as bloodletting and how some of the terminology and ideas associated with the four humours continue to be used in modern medicine.

Conclusion (5 minutes):

Have students complete a short writing exercise where they reflect on what they learned about the four humours and their significance in medical history. Collect the exercises and answer any questions students may still have about the topic.

Additional Resources:

Provide students with additional resources such as books or articles on the topic of the four humours in medical history and their modern day significance. Encourage students to explore these resources to deepen their understanding of the topic.
