Overview
This lesson is designed for Year/Grade 6 students and will explore Greek mythology, focusing on the most important gods and goddesses. The lesson will last 30 minutes and will include a homework assignment.
Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
- Identify major Greek gods and goddesses
- Describe the basic characteristics of each god/goddess
- Explain the role of each god/goddess in Greek mythology
- Draw connections between Greek mythology and modern-day culture
Materials Needed
- Whiteboard and markers
- Handout with information on Greek gods and goddesses
- Internet access for interactive portion of the lesson
Procedure
- Introduction (5 minutes)
- Begin the lesson by briefly introducing Greek mythology and its importance in Western culture.
- Interactive Portion (10 minutes)
- Divide the students into small groups and provide them with access to the internet.
- Instruct each group to research one god or goddess and create a short presentation (lasting no more than 2 minutes) to share with the class.
- As each group presents, write down the key characteristics of the god/goddess on the whiteboard.
- After each group presents, lead a class discussion about the role of the god/goddess in Greek mythology.
- Lecture/Discussion (10 minutes)
- Using the handout as a guide, provide a brief lecture about the most important Greek gods and goddesses.
- As you discuss each god/goddess, encourage students to connect their characteristics and roles to modern-day culture.
- Homework Assignment (5 minutes)
- Assign a short writing assignment in which students will choose one god or goddess and explain how their characteristics and roles are reflected in modern-day culture.
Homework Assignment
Choose one Greek god or goddess and explain (in at least one paragraph) how their characteristics and roles are reflected in modern-day culture. Consider how these gods/goddesses have influenced literature, art, music, and other aspects of society.
