Learning Objective

Students will be able to create and solve different types of proportional relationships through problem-solving scenarios.

Materials Needed

Do Now (5 minutes)

On the board, write the following question:

Sofia ran 7 miles in 30 minutes. At the same speed, how many miles can she run in 1 hour and 30 minutes?

Have the students work independently on the question and then share their answers with others sitting next to them.

Mini Lesson (20 minutes)

Introduction

Explain what proportional relationships are and provide examples.

Types of Proportional Relationships

There are three types of proportional relationships:

  1. Direct Proportion: As one quantity increases, the other one increases as well, and vice versa.
  2. Inverse Proportion: As one quantity increases, the other one decreases, and vice versa.
  3. Joint Proportions: More than one quantity and a constant are involved in the relationship.

Explain each type of proportional relationship with examples.

Creating Problem-Solving Scenarios

Explain to the students that they will work in pairs to create and solve their own problem-solving scenarios using different types of proportional relationships. Each example should include a problem that displays a proportional relationship and one of the three types of proportional relationships described in the lesson.

Practice (25 minutes)

Distribute the Partnered Problem-Solving Activity worksheet. The students will work in pairs to create and solve their own problem-solving scenarios. Circulate the room, providing help as needed.

Exit Ticket (5 minutes)

Distribute the Homework worksheet that includes three proportional relationship problems. Before leaving class, have the students solve one of the problems independently and hand it in.

Formative Assessment

Partnered problem-solving activity will be the formative assessment for this lesson.

Extension Activity

Challenge the students to create two additional problem-solving scenarios using the proportional relationships they learned in class. Have the students practice solving these problems independently at home.
