Welcome, class!
Today, we will be talking about something that may be difficult, but is very important to understand - racism. I know this can be a heavy topic, but together we can learn how to make the world a better place.
Before we delve deeper into the topic, let's start with what we already know. What does the word "racism" mean to you? Have you ever experienced or witnessed racism? How did it make you feel?
I want you to take a moment to reflect silently, and then share with the class if you feel comfortable. Remember, we are here to listen and learn from each other.
Now, let's try a mini-activity. I want everyone to pair up with someone sitting next to them. Together, I want you to write down as many stereotypes as you can think of about a specific race or ethnicity.
Once you're done, we'll come back together as a class and discuss how stereotypes can lead to prejudice and discrimination.
As we wrap up this introduction to our lesson on racism, remember that this is just the beginning. We will be discussing different types of racism, and exploring ways to combat it.
I encourage you all to keep an open mind, and remember that we are all in this together. By working hard to understand and dismantle racism, we can create a more just and equitable world.
