Welcome back, class! Today's lesson is going to be a little different. We're going to discuss civil rights through a scenario-based activity called "What Would You Do?"
Imagine it’s the 1960s, and you live in a small town in the southern United States. You're walking home from school with a group of friends when you see a sign on a store that says, "Whites Only." You see a group of black students standing in front of the store, looking sad and defeated. Suddenly, you see a group of white kids shouting insults and throwing rocks at them. What would you do in this situation?
Take a moment to think about what you would do in this scenario. Would you speak up against the white kids? Would you walk away and pretend like nothing happened? Would you join the white kids in throwing rocks?
Now, let's discuss as a class. Raise your hand if you would speak up and defend the black students. Why do you think it's important to speak up?
Raise your hand if you would walk away and pretend like nothing happened? Why do you think that might not be the right choice in this situation?
Civil rights are all about standing up for what's right, even when it's difficult or uncomfortable. We must all fight for equality and respect, no matter the color of our skin or our background. Today's lesson has taught us the importance of standing up for what is right. Let's continue to make the world a better and equal place for everyone.
