Objective
Students will expand their knowledge of sight words and learn new vocabulary words through a variety of word study activities.
Materials Needed
- Whiteboard and markers
- Individual whiteboards and markers for each student
- Word study list (provided by teacher)
- Word sort activity sheet
- Letter tiles
Activities
- Word Sort Activity (10 minutes)
- Have students work in pairs to sort words from the word study list into categories based on their spelling patterns.
- After sorting, have students discuss why certain words belong in each category.
- Use the whiteboard to create a chart of the different categories and the words that belong in each.
- Sight Word Review (5 minutes)
- Students will write down as many sight words as they can remember from previous lessons on their individual whiteboards.
- After a few minutes, review the most commonly missed sight words as a class.
- Vocabulary Word Building (10 minutes)
- Using letter tiles, students will work in pairs to create new words from the word study list.
- Encourage them to use prefixes, suffixes, and root words to create new words.
- Have students share some of their new words with the class and discuss their meanings.
- Word Hunt (5 minutes)
- Students will use the word study list to find examples of the words in a text they are currently reading.
- Have them share their findings with a partner or the class as a whole.
Assessment
- Observe students during activities to assess their understanding of sight words and ability to use word patterns to build vocabulary words.
Closure
End the lesson by reviewing the word categories and new vocabulary words students learned. Encourage them to continue practicing these skills in their own reading outside of class.
