Today, we're going to discover the amazing world of text features! Text features are special parts of a book or article that help us understand the material better. They include headings, pictures, captions, bold words, and more!
Materials Needed:
Set the Scene: Gather your students in a comfortable area of the classroom. Show them a "treasure chest" (a decorated box) filled with paper, colored pencils, and markers. Tell them that today they are going to be treasure hunters on a mission to explore text features!
Introduce the Treasure Map: Explain that the piece of paper or poster board is like a treasure map. Just as a treasure map has different symbols to guide you to the treasure, the text in a book has special features that help you understand the treasure of knowledge it holds.
Draw Connections: Start drawing simple symbols on the board to represent different text features:
Create a Class Map Together: Invite students to brainstorm other text features they’ve seen before. As they share their ideas, add their suggestions to the treasure map. Ensure to discuss what each feature is and how it helps in understanding the text.
Treasure Hunt: Once you've built the "map" of text features, hand out the colored pencils and markers for students to decorate their own maps. You could even have a real treasure hunt using books with various text features laid out in the classroom, encouraging them to identify these features and uncover the treasure of knowledge hidden within words!
Once they’re done, gather the students to discuss their findings. Ask them:
This engaging start will captivate young minds and prepare them for a fun and educational lesson on text features!
