"Today, we are going to talk about a special day that is celebrated in the United States. It is called Memorial Day, and it is a day to honor and remember those who died while serving in the military.
"Before we begin to learn more about Memorial Day, I want you to think for a moment about someone who has served in the military. It could be a family member, a friend, or even someone you have read about in history books. What sacrifices do you think they made for our country? What do you think motivates them to serve?"
"Before we dive into the history of Memorial Day, there are some important vocabulary words that we need to know. Please take out a piece of paper and a pen or pencil. I am going to say a word, and I would like you to write down the definition as best you can based on your prior knowledge. We will then compare our definitions as a class.
"To get a better understanding of what memorials are, let's take a look at some examples from around the world. I am going to show you some pictures on the screen, and I would like you to write down what you notice about each one. What do they have in common? What are some differences?"
"Now that we have a basic understanding of what memorials are, we are going to delve into the history of Memorial Day. When did it start? Why is it important? What events led to its creation?"
"Memorial Day is a solemn and important day for our country. As we go through this lesson, I want you to keep in mind the sacrifices that our service members have made for us. It is up to us to honor and remember them."
