Lesson Introduction (5 minutes)

To introduce the lesson, I will show students examples of woven art from different cultures and time periods. I will set up a small table with a weaving loom, various completed weavings, and materials that students are going to use in this lesson. I will also briefly explain what weaving is and what it can be used for.

Lesson Body (20 minutes)

  1. First, I will demonstrate how to create the initial base of the weave. Using a piece of cardboard, I will show students how to cut notches on two opposite ends of the cardboard and attach the yarn to create the warp threads.
  2. Then, students will cut various materials into strips or pieces and start weaving them into the warp threads. I will explain basic weaving patterns such as over-under, under-over, and diagonal.
  3. Students will be encouraged to use a variety of materials to create texture and color in their weaving.
  4. While students are weaving, I will also show them different weaving techniques such as adding beads or making tassels.

Lesson Conclusion (5 minutes)

After finishing their weavings, students will present their final artwork to the class and explain what materials they used and any techniques they applied. Students will also be encouraged to ask questions and make comments about each other's work. Lastly, I will give a brief homework assignment to students to create a small weaving using any materials they have at home and bring it to the next class to share.

Homework (5 minutes)

Students will take home a small piece of cardboard with notches already cut and will need to create a weaving using any materials they have at home. The weaving should be about 5 inches wide and 5 inches tall. They will need to bring their completed weaving to the next class and be prepared to explain why they chose certain materials and any techniques they applied.
