Course Goal
The goal of this course is to provide Year/Grade 7 students with a foundation in French as a second language. By the end of the course, students should be able to communicate in basic French, understand vocabulary and grammar fundamentals, and develop an appreciation for French culture.
Course Aims
- Introduce French vocabulary and basic grammar concepts
- Develop basic conversational French skills
- Provide an understanding of French culture and customs
- Encourage the use of French in different contexts
- Develop reading and writing skills in French
Lesson Plan
Lesson 1-3: Introductions
- Introduce the course and review its goals and aims
- Learn basic greetings and introductions in French
- Practice introducing oneself and others
- Vocabulary: bonjour, salut, comment ça va, je m’appelle, etc.
Lesson 4-6: French Vocabulary I
- Learn basic French vocabulary related to animals, colors, and food
- Use this vocabulary to form simple sentences
- Vocabulary: chien, chat, rouge, bleu, jaune, pomme, banane, etc.
Lesson 7-9: French Vocabulary II
- Learn basic French vocabulary related to clothes, family, and weather
- Use this vocabulary to form simple sentences
- Vocabulary: chemise, robe, manteau, frère, sœur, père, mère, soleil, pluie, neige, etc.
Lesson 10-12: French Grammar I
- Learn basic grammar concepts, such as articles (le, la, les) and subject-verb agreement
- Use these concepts to form simple sentences
- Grammar: le, la, les, un, une, conjugation of être and avoir, etc.
Lesson 13-15: French Grammar II
- Learn basic grammar concepts related to possession, negation, adjectives, and adverbs
- Use these concepts to form more complex sentences
- Grammar: mon, ma, mes, ne…pas, petit, grand, vite, lentement, etc.
Lesson 16-18: French Culture I
- Learn about Francophone countries and their cultures
- Discuss differences between French and English-speaking cultures
- Learn about French holidays and traditions
Lesson 19-21: French Conversation I
- Practice using French in simple conversations
- Discuss personal interests and hobbies
- Use basic vocabulary and grammar concepts to form sentences
Lesson 22-24: French Vocabulary III
- Learn basic French vocabulary related to school, transportation, and places in the city
- Use this vocabulary to form simple sentences
- Vocabulary: école, bus, métro, rue, parc, magasin, etc.
Lesson 25-27: French Grammar III
- Learn basic grammar concepts related to reflexive verbs, the imperative, and time
- Use these concepts to form more complex sentences
- Grammar: se lever, se laver, arrête!, attendre, maintenant, bientôt, etc.
Lesson 28-30: French Culture II
- Learn about French cuisine and famous French dishes
- Discuss French cinema and music
- Learn about French history and famous French figures
Lesson 31-33: French Conversation II
- Practice using French in more complex conversations
- Discuss travel and vacation plans
- Use more advanced grammar concepts to form sentences
Lesson 34-36: French Vocabulary IV and Writing I
- Learn basic French vocabulary related to professions, animals, and tourism
- Practice writing sentences in French using the vocabulary and grammar concepts learned throughout the course
- Vocabulary: avocat, policier, chat, chien, plage, musée, etc.
