Grade Level: Year/Grade 10 (age of students is 14-16)
Lesson Length: 30 minutes
Learning Objectives:
Understand what plate tectonics are
Recognize the different types of plate boundaries and the geological processes that occur at these boundaries
Identify and describe examples of tectonic landforms and features, such as mountains, volcanoes, and earthquakes
Materials:
World map
Images of tectonic landforms and features
Video clips illustrating plate tectonics and tectonic boundary types
Introduction (3 minutes):
Ask students to mark on the world map where they think the earth's major tectonic plates are located.
Share the correct locations with students and introduce the topic of plate tectonics.
Presentation (15 minutes):
Define plate tectonics and explain how the theory was developed.
Discuss the different types of plate boundaries and what geological processes occur at each.
Show examples of tectonic landforms and features for each type of boundary.
Use video clips to help students visualize plate tectonics and tectonic boundary types.
Activity (10 minutes):
Ask students to work in pairs to create a diagram or model of a specific tectonic boundary, labeling the processes that occur and the landforms/ features that are associated with it.
Conclusion (2 minutes):
Review the learning objectives and ask students if they can summarize what they learned in today's lesson.
Assign homework: Students will research and write a short paper on a specific tectonic landform or feature of their choice.
Homework:
Research and write a one-page paper on a specific tectonic landform or feature.
Include information on how the landform/feature was formed, where it is located, and any historical significance.
Submit paper at the start of the next geography class.
