Lesson Starter: Fun with Money!

Objective

To introduce Year 1 students to the basic concepts of money and financial literacy through a fun and engaging story activity.

The Great Candy Shop Adventure

Introduction

Gather the students in a circle and ask them:

"Who likes candy?"

Allow a few students to share their favorite candies. After that, segue into the lesson with the following story.

Story Time

"Today, we are going to visit a magical place called the Great Candy Shop! In this shop, there are all kinds of candies: chocolate bars, gummy bears, lollipops, and jellybeans! But there's one thing we need to remember — each candy has a price!"

Engage with Questions

  1. What do you think the price of a lollipop might be?

    • (Encourage students to shout out numbers, demonstrating their understanding of simple counting.)
  2. If you have 5 coins, and each lollipop costs 2 coins, how many lollipops can you buy?

    • Use fingers or small items like blocks for counting together.

Activity

Now that we are all excited about the candy shop, let’s pretend we are the shopkeepers!

  1. Create a price list.

    • On the board, write a price list for different candies:
      • Lollipop: 2 coins
      • Chocolate bar: 3 coins
      • Gummy bear pack: 1 coin
      • Jellybean bag: 4 coins
  2. Role-play buying candy.

    • Divide the class into two groups: shoppers and shopkeepers. Give out play coins to the shoppers.
    • Let the shoppers choose candies based on their coins and practice counting how many coins they have left after each purchase.

Wrap-Up

After the role-play, gather the students back in a circle.
