Start by asking students to close their eyes and imagine their future selves. Give them a minute or two to do this. Then, ask the class to share what they imagined with a partner or in small groups. Encourage them to think about what they will be doing, where they will be living, and who they will be with.
Next, lead a class discussion about the future. Ask open-ended questions like: What are some things you're looking forward to in the future? What are some challenges you think you might face? How do you think technology will change our lives in the next 10 years?
Have students work in small groups to brainstorm a list of 10 things they think will be different in the future. They can use their imaginations and think outside the box. After they've written their list, ask each group to share their top 3 predictions with the class.
Hand out a short story or article about the future and have students read it individually. Then, ask them to write a paragraph or two about how the story connects to their own visions of the future.
To wrap up the lesson, have students share their paragraph with a partner or in small groups. Encourage them to discuss the similarities and differences in their visions of the future. Finally, ask each student to share one thing they learned or one question they still have about the future.
