Today, we're going to discover an exciting tool that helps us become better writers: mentor texts! A mentor text is a story or a piece of writing that teaches us something about how to write. We will look at different mentor texts and talk about what makes them special.
To kick off our lesson, let's pretend that we have a magic window right here in our classroom! This window allows us to peek into different stories and see how the authors create their magical worlds.
Gather Around: Ask all students to sit in a circle. Provide a large picture or a brief excerpt from an engaging mentor text (like The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle).
Show and Share: Hold up the picture or text and say, "Through our magic window, we can see that this author uses colorful illustrations and simple words to tell a wonderful story."
Think-Pair-Share:
After sharing, remind the students that today we will read different mentor texts to learn how they can make our own writing magical! By looking through our magic window, we’ll discover new ways to express our ideas and feelings through words and pictures.
Now that we've opened our magic window, who’s ready to dive into our first mentor text adventure? Let’s find out what stories are waiting for us!
