Introduction

"Good morning, everyone! Today, we are going to dive into a very important topic in our health class—Nutrition. Can anyone tell me why you think nutrition is a crucial part of our lives?"

Pause for student responses.

"That's right! Nutrition plays a vital role in our overall health and well-being. It helps us grow, develop, and maintain our energy levels. Eating a balanced diet ensures we get all the necessary nutrients our bodies need to function properly."

Nutritional Components Overview

"Now, let's get into the nuts and bolts of nutrition! We'll be exploring the essential components of a balanced diet. There are five main types of nutrients we need to focus on, and I'll be showing you some visuals to help us understand them better."

Use the projector to display images of carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, and minerals.

"First, we have carbohydrates, which are our body's main source of energy. Next are proteins—they help build and repair our tissues. Now, fats might get a bad reputation sometimes, but they are essential for our health too! They help with hormone production and nutrient absorption.

Then we have vitamins, which are vital for our body’s processes, and minerals, which are important for many bodily functions. Each of these nutrients is found in a variety of foods. Does anyone have an example of a food that’s high in one of these nutrients?"

Encourage a few students to share examples.

"Great contributions! It's clear that these nutrients come from a variety of food sources which we should include in our diets."

Activity: Fill Nutrition Cards

"Now it's your turn to get involved! I’m going to hand out printable nutrition cards. On these cards, you’ll see a list of nutrients along with a space for you to fill in their functions and examples of food sources."

Distribute the nutrition cards.

"Take about 5 minutes to fill in the information. Remember to think creatively about the foods you know and enjoy that contain these nutrients!"

Allow time for students to work on their cards.

Class Discussion

"Time’s up! Now, let’s share what you filled out on your nutrition cards. I’d love to hear different food sources you’ve listed for each nutrient. Who would like to start?"

Encourage students to share and engage in discussion.

"Thank you all for sharing! It's important to understand how diverse our food choices can be and how they contribute to our nutrition."

Collect & Check Cards

"Now, I’m going to collect your nutrition cards. I’ll just go around and randomly check for a few to see how you did!"

Go around the room and check cards, making notes on engagement.

"Remember to put your first names on your cards for easy reference when I collect them."

Assign Homework

"Before we wrap up, I want to let you know about your homework assignment. Over the weekend, I’d like you to analyze your own eating habits. I will be providing a template that you can complete, detailing what you eat and how it aligns with a balanced diet."

Hand out the homework template.

"You’ll submit this template at the beginning of our next class. This will help you reflect on your choices and see where you might want to make changes. Does anyone have any questions about the homework?"

Address any questions.

"Great! I’m looking forward to seeing what you all come up with. Have a fantastic weekend!"
