Converting Between Minutes and Hours
30 minutes
To engage students, ask them how long it takes to brush their teeth, take a shower, or watch their favorite TV show. Ask them to estimate the time in minutes and hours. After collecting responses, have them share their answers with the class. Then ask students if they know how to convert minutes to hours and vice versa.
Begin by explaining that an hour is 60 minutes. Show the students how the clock has 60 minutes around the dial, and explain how the hands on the clock move as time goes by. Demonstrate how to convert minutes to hours and hours to minutes using proportional reasoning. Show them some examples of how to convert a specified number of minutes to hours and vice versa.
Hand out worksheets where students can practice converting between minutes and hours. Provide guidance as students work through the problems, monitoring their progress and providing assistance as needed.
Assign students independent exercises or summaries to a prompt that asks them to apply what they’ve learned. These should be able to be completed within the remaining time of the class.
Ask students to share what they’ve learned in the lesson. Provide a recap of the key takeaways and take questions from the class.
Evaluate students progress by checking their worksheets and if they understand how to convert between minutes and hours. This will also help you identify any areas where more instruction or support may be needed.
For students who find the lesson challenging, allow them to work in pairs or groups to complete the activities. For those who need additional support, provide extra materials or simplified instructions to make the lesson more accessible.
