Mathematics Lesson: Exploring 2D Shapes

Introduction

Welcome, Little Mathematicians!

Today, we're going to embark on an exciting journey into the world of 2D shapes! Grab your thinking caps because we’re going to fold paper and create a wonderful shape masterpiece together!

Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

Materials Needed

Lesson Outline

1. Shape Introduction (10 minutes)

Let’s start by gathering around in a circle. I will bring some real-world objects to show you. Can you guess what shape they are?

After we pass around the objects, let’s name more shapes! You can help by drawing them in the air with your fingers.

2. Paper Folding Fun (15 minutes)

Now it’s time for the magic of folding! You each will receive a piece of paper. Watch closely as I demonstrate how to fold the paper to create different shapes.

Steps to Fold Your Paper:

  1. For a Triangle: Fold one corner of the paper down to meet the opposite edge. Flatten it well, then unfold.
  2. For a Square: You can cut your paper in half to make two squares, or just fold it in half and then cut along the fold.
  3. For a Rectangle: Fold your paper in half lengthwise.

3. Create Your Collage (15 minutes)

Now that you’ve folded your shapes, it’s time to decorate! Use the crayons or markers to colour your shapes. You can make them into a fun picture! For example, you could create a house with a square base, a triangle roof, and a circle sun.

4. Share and Discuss (10 minutes)

Once you have finished your artwork, we’ll gather again to share our creations.

Conclusion

What a fantastic adventure we had today! You all did an amazing job exploring 2D shapes with paper folding. Remember, shapes are all around us in our world!

Homework

Can you find at least three objects at home that match the 2D shapes we learned today? Draw or take pictures of them to share in our next class!
