Mathematics Lesson Plan: Activities in AM and PM
Grade: 2
Duration: 30 Minutes
Subject: Mathematics
Topic: Activities in AM and PM
Objective
Students will be able to identify and differentiate between activities that typically occur in the AM (morning) and PM (afternoon/evening). They will also practice telling time using AM and PM.
Materials Needed
- Chart paper
- Markers
- Clock with movable hands (or a paper clock for each student)
- Worksheets for practice
- Whiteboard and markers
Lesson Outline
Introduction (5 minutes)
- Begin by asking students what they think "AM" and "PM" stand for.
- Explain that "AM" refers to the time from midnight to noon, and "PM" refers to the time from noon to midnight.
- Discuss simple examples of activities typically done in the morning (e.g., waking up, having breakfast) versus those done in the evening (e.g., having dinner, going to bed).
Direct Instruction (10 minutes)
- Use the chart paper to list common activities associated with AM and PM.
- AM Examples: Wake up, Breakfast, School, Play outside
- PM Examples: Lunch, Homework, Dinner, Bedtime
- As you list these activities, involve students by asking them to contribute their ideas.
- Demonstrate using a clock to show how to read different times and say whether they are AM or PM.
Guided Practice (10 minutes)
- Hand out paper clocks to each student.
- Call out various activities and ask the students to represent the time they would typically do them on their clocks (e.g., "When do you have breakfast?" "What time do you usually go to bed?").
- Walk around to ensure understanding and provide assistance as needed.
Independent Practice (5 minutes)
- Distribute worksheets with a mix of activities where students will need to label each as occurring in AM or PM.
- Example Worksheet Tasks:
- Draw a line connecting the activity to AM or PM.
- Circle the correct time shown on the clock next to each activity.
Homework
Complete the following tasks at home:
- Write three activities you do in the morning and three activities you do in the evening.
- What time do you usually wake up? Draw a clock showing that time and label it as AM.
- What time do you usually go to bed? Draw a clock showing that time and label it as PM.
Homework Answers

Conclusion (Wrap Up)
- Review the key points of AM and PM.
- Ask students to share their clocks from the homework with the class, discussing the times they indicated for their activities.
- Reinforce the importance of understanding time as it relates to daily activities.
