Students will understand how to partition 3-digit numbers using non-standard methods and be able to apply this knowledge in practical situations.
Begin the lesson by reviewing place values with the students. Ask them to explain what hundreds, tens, and units are. Use several examples of 3-digit numbers and ask students to identify the value of each digit.
Introduce the concept of non-standard partitioning. Explain that partitioning a number means breaking it down into parts. Use the example of the number 453.
Use place value blocks to visually demonstrate these partitions. Show how breaking numbers into different parts can help in addition or subtraction.
Distribute worksheets with various 3-digit numbers for students to partition either on their own or in pairs. Walk around the classroom to assist students as needed.
Have students complete a few more examples on their own. Encourage them to try different ways of partitioning the same number to show their understanding.
Wrap up the lesson by discussing what students learned about partitioning. Ask a few students to share their favorite way to partition a number. Reinforce the idea that there are many ways to break down a 3-digit number and that it can be useful in solving math problems.
Partition the following 3-digit numbers in at least two different ways:
Create your own 3-digit number and write two different partitioning methods for it.
For 482:
For 619:
For 753:
Encourage students to be creative with their partitioning and remind them to check their work. Provide assistance for any students who may need further help as they complete their homework.
