Lesson script

Introduction

"Good morning, class! Today, we're going to talk about something very important in our everyday lives: wants and needs. Can anyone tell me what they think a 'want' is? Yes, that's right! A 'want' is something we would like to have but don't necessarily need to survive. Now, what about a 'need'? Great job! A 'need' is something that is essential for our survival, like food, water, and shelter. Can anyone give me examples of their wants and needs? Fantastic! I love how you all are thinking about these concepts!"

Printable Card Distribution

"Now, I have some printable cards for each of you. I want you to pay close attention because these cards are very important for our next activity. Each card has a space for you to write examples of your wants and needs. I'll give you a moment to look it over. Make sure to keep it handy; we'll be filling it out together as we go through the lesson. Remember, you can put your thoughts down as we discuss!"

Group Activity

"Alright, everyone, it's time to get into groups! I’m going to divide you into small teams of four or five. Once you're in your groups, I want you to discuss among yourselves and come up with a list of examples of wants and needs. Each group will have a chart to write them on. Take about 10 minutes for this activity; use the time wisely to share your ideas with one another!"

Physical Activity Break

"Now that we've all worked hard in our groups, let's take a quick break! Stand up and stretch your arms high to the ceiling! Let's do some jumping jacks! How about we do 10 together? Ready? One, two, three... Keep going! Great job, everyone! This quick activity helps us recharge our brains and get ready for the next part of our lesson."

Saving and Spending Discussion

"Okay, let's gather back together! Now that we’ve explored wants and needs, let’s talk about saving and spending. Who can tell me what ‘saving’ means? Exactly! To save is to keep some of our money instead of spending it all. And what does ‘spending’ mean? Right again! Spending is using our money to buy things. What do you think is more important: saving or spending? Let’s have a short discussion. I want to hear your thoughts!"

Card Collection/Checking

"Now that we've discussed saving and spending, I’d like to collect your cards. If you haven’t filled them out yet, quickly write down your wants and needs while I walk around. For those who have finished, I’ll come by and check your cards. I might ask a quick question to see how well you understand these concepts. Remember, this is just a check-in to see what we’ve learned today. Great work, everyone!"
