The goal is to allow students to express their thoughts while fostering an environment of respect, open-mindedness, and constructive feedback.
Objectives
- To reflect on the importance of respectful listening and behaviour in the art classroom.
- To promote collaboration and discussions around personal artistic experiences.
- To encourage students to provide and receive constructive feedback.
Activity: Art Circle Reflection
Materials Needed
- Large piece of paper or poster board
- Markers, pencils, and art supplies
- Sticky notes (in different colours)
- A timer
- Soft music for ambiance (optional)
Instructions
-
Setup the Environment
- Arrange chairs in a circle or semi-circle to facilitate discussion and eye contact among students.
- Place a large piece of paper or poster board in the center of the circle, along with markers and art supplies.
-
Introduction (5 minutes)
- Begin with a brief discussion on the importance of respect in the art classroom. Ask students to share what respectful listening looks like and why it's important during critiques and discussions.
-
Silent Art Reflection (10 minutes)
- Ask students to take 10 minutes to quietly reflect and draw or write on sticky notes about their experiences with respectful behaviour in prior art classes. Prompt them with questions such as:
- "How did respectful listening enhance your understanding of art?"
- "Can you recall a moment where constructive feedback changed your approach to a piece?"
- Encourage them to use drawings or symbols to express their thoughts.
-
Art Circle Sharing (15 minutes)
- Have students take turns placing their sticky notes on the large paper and sharing their reflections with the class.
- Encourage respectful listening by setting ground rules: only one person speaks at a time, no interruptions, and each contribution is acknowledged.
-
Group Artwork (15 minutes)
- After everyone has shared their sticky notes, invite students to collaboratively create an artwork on the large piece of paper, incorporating elements from their reflections. This can be a collage, a mural, or an abstract representation of their ideas.
- Encourage students to discuss and negotiate over the design, using their skills in respectful listening and behaviour.
-
Wrap-Up Discussion (5 minutes)
- Conclude the session with a brief discussion:
- Ask students how they felt during the activity.
- Discuss the role of respectful listening in artistic growth and collaboration.
- Reflect on how they can apply what they've learned about respectful behaviour in future art classes and beyond.
Conclusion
This engaging activity not only allows students to reflect on their experiences and learnings about respectful listening and behaviour but also promotes an atmosphere of collaboration and trust. By creatively expressing their ideas together, students will understand the vital role respect plays in an artistic community.
