Introduce Food Vocabulary: Use flashcards to introduce a variety of food items. Examples include:
Pronunciation Practice: Model the pronunciation of each word and have students repeat after you.
Simple Sentences: Introduce sentence structures. For example:
Pair Work: Have students pair up. One student will ask, “Was ist dein Lieblingsessen?” while the other responds. They will switch roles after a few minutes.
Food Survey: Each student will walk around the class and ask at least three classmates, “Was ist dein Lieblingsessen?” Then, they will summarise their findings on a whiteboard by listing the foods mentioned (in German).
Wrap-Up Discussion: Gather students together and ask a few to share what they learned about their classmates' favourite foods in German.
Homework Assignment: Ask students to write a short paragraph about their favourite food in German, using vocabulary and sentence structures learned in class.
This lesson plan is aligned with the Australian Curriculum for Year 5, encouraging students to engage actively with a new language and develop their speaking and listening skills in a fun context.
