Materials Needed
- Whiteboard and markers
- Blank paper
- Pencils
- Example narrative storybooks (optional)
Lesson Duration
30 minutes
Introduction (5 minutes)
1. Greet the Students
- "Good morning, everyone! Today, we are going to learn how to write a fun story—called a narrative!"
2. What is a Narrative?
- "A narrative is a story that tells about events. It can be about real or imaginary things."
- "Can anyone tell me a story they love? What happens in that story?"
Direct Instruction (10 minutes)
3. Components of a Narrative
- "Every good narrative has three parts: the beginning, the middle, and the end. Let's break that down."
Beginning
- "In the beginning, we introduce the characters and setting. Who is in the story? Where does it take place?"
Middle
- "The middle part is where the main events happen. What do the characters do? What adventures do they have?"
End
- "Finally, in the end, we see what happens and how the story wraps up. Do the characters solve their problems? What do they learn?"
4. Example Story Structure
- "Let’s think about a simple story together. If I say, 'Once upon a time, in a big green forest, there lived a little rabbit named Benny.'"
- "This is the beginning! Now for the middle—'Benny loved to explore, but one day he got lost. What do you think happened next?'"
- "And for the end—'After a long adventure, Benny found his way home and learned to always pay attention to where he was going.'"
Guided Practice (5 minutes)
5. Brainstorming Ideas
- "Now, let’s think of our own story! I want you to close your eyes and imagine a character. It can be an animal, a person, or even a superhero!"
- "Raise your hand and share your character and where they live. I'm writing these on the board."
6. Create a Story Map Together
- "Great ideas, everyone! Let’s pick one character and start building our narrative together."
- "What adventure should they go on? Let’s decide on the beginning and what challenge they might face in the middle!"
Independent Practice (7 minutes)
7. Write Your Own Narrative
- "Now it’s your turn! I want each of you to write your own narrative using the structure we've discussed."
- "Start with your character, where they live, what adventure they will have, and how it all ends."
- "Remember to make sure you have a beginning, middle, and end."
Conclusion and Sharing (3 minutes)
8. Share Your Story
- "Who would like to share their story with the class? Let’s listen carefully and celebrate the adventures!"
- "Great job, everyone! I loved hearing your stories."
9. Wrap-Up
- "Today, we learned how to write a narrative with a beginning, middle, and end. You all did an amazing job!"
- "Remember, you can create stories anytime you want. Keep practicing your writing!"
Assessment
- Collect students' narratives to assess understanding of narrative structure and creativity.
