Lesson Plan: Composing and Decomposing Numbers

Subject

Mathematics

Topic

Composing and Decomposing Numbers

Grade Level

Reception / Kindergarten

Duration

30 minutes

Objectives

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

Materials Needed

Introduction (5 minutes)

  1. Start with a brief introduction to the concepts of composing and decomposing numbers.

    • Composing Numbers: When we put numbers together to make a bigger number.
    • Decomposing Numbers: When we break a number apart to see how many different ways we can make that number.
  2. Use visuals or manipulatives to illustrate the concepts.

    • For example, show how two blocks and three blocks can be combined to make five blocks (composing).
    • Show how five blocks can be separated into two blocks and three blocks (decomposing).

Direct Instruction (10 minutes)

  1. Demonstrate Composing Numbers:

    • Use counting blocks to demonstrate different ways to compose the number 5.
      • Example: 1 & 4, 2 & 3, and 5 (as a whole).
    • Write these combinations on the whiteboard.
  2. Demonstrate Decomposing Numbers:

    • Again use counting blocks to break down the number 5 into different combinations.
      • Example: 5 can be composed of 5 & 0 or 2 & 3.
  3. Engage students by asking them to point out different ways to compose and decompose numbers using their own blocks or manipulatives.

Guided Practice (10 minutes)

  1. Provide each student with a worksheet titled "Composing and Decomposing Numbers."

  2. The worksheet will contain:

    • A section for students to fill in different ways to compose numbers from 1 to 5.
    • A section to decompose numbers, where students will draw blocks or write combinations.
  3. Walk around the classroom to assist and guide students as they work on their worksheets.

Closing Activity (5 minutes)

  1. Gather the students and review key concepts.

    • Ask questions such as:
      • "What is composing a number?"
      • "Can someone give me an example of decomposing the number 3?"
  2. To reinforce the lesson, conduct a fun counting activity with snacks. Use snacks to represent numbers, and have students compose numbers by using the snacks to make different combinations.

Homework Assignment

Title: Composing and Decomposing at Home

Instructions:

  1. Complete the following tasks at home with your family:

    • Take a handful of pasta, blocks, or any small items.
    • Compose the number 6 using different combinations and write each combination down.
    • Decompose the number 6 into two parts and draw a picture of each part.
  2. Each student should use a separate sheet of paper for their work and draw or write down their findings.

Example Answers:

Reflection

At the end of the lesson, reflect on the concepts taught and the student engagement through questions like:

This lesson plan effectively introduces young learners to the foundational concepts of composing and decomposing numbers in an engaging and interactive manner.
