This lesson plan aims to create an engaging environment where young students can express themselves through music while getting to know their peers.
"Good morning, everyone! I'm so happy to see all your smiling faces today. Welcome to our music lesson! Today, we are going to get to know each other better through something we all love: music! Let's start with a fun song to get our bodies moving. I’ll play a short, upbeat song, and I want you to clap your hands and dance around! Ready? Here we go!"
(Play an upbeat song for about 1-2 minutes, encouraging all students to participate.)
"Great job everyone! Now that we’re all warmed up, let’s sit down on the mat and talk about our day!"
"Who can remember what we talked about last time? Yes! We learned about different sounds and instruments. Now, I would like to ask a few of you to share what you did for homework. Would anyone like to present first?"
(Choose one or two students to share their homework. Make sure to praise their efforts.)
"Thank you for sharing! It’s wonderful to hear about your experiences with music."
"Now it’s time to get into small groups! I want you to turn to your friends next to you and share your favorite song or musical instrument. Talk about why you like it. You have 10 minutes! Go ahead!"
(Walk around the room, listening to the groups and encouraging them.)
"Wow! I hear so many exciting things about music! Remember, this is a chance to learn more about each other."
"Now, I have something special for each of you. I'm going to hand out these printable cards. On your card, I want you to write your name and your favourite type of music or instrument. Use markers or crayons to make it colourful!"
(Hand out the cards and give students a couple of minutes to complete this activity.)
"Great job, everyone! Once you're finished, hold your cards up high!"
"Now, let’s share our answers! I want you to find a partner and tell them what you wrote on your cards. You have 3 minutes!"
(After 3 minutes, bring everyone back together.)
"Okay, everyone, let’s take a look at some of the cards. I’ll randomly pick a few and ask you to share with the whole class what you wrote! Who thinks they can tell me what is on their card?"
(Choose a few cards to discuss and celebrate the variety of musical preferences in the room.)
"Wow, I’ve loved hearing about all the different music and instruments we like! Let’s gather together for a moment. Can anyone tell me one thing they learned about their classmates today?"
(Encourage a few students to share their reflections.)
"Excellent! It’s so wonderful to see how music connects us all."
"For our next lesson, I would like you all to think about a song you'd love to share with the class. It could be your favourite song that makes you happy or a song that you think your friends would enjoy! Remember to tell your family about this, too. I can’t wait to hear what you pick! See you next time!"
