Introduction

“Good morning, everyone! Welcome to our music lesson today! I’m really excited to get to know all of you better. Our objectives for today’s lesson are to foster a sense of community within our classroom, express our musical interests, and have some fun while we do it! We’ll be using some printable cards for an activity, so let’s get started."

Homework Check

“Now, before we jump into our activity, I’d like to check on the homework for this week. Who would like to share their homework with the class? Maybe two volunteers? Great! Go ahead and present what you’ve prepared.”

Wait for students to present their homework, encouraging peers to give positive feedback.

“Fantastic job, everyone! It’s wonderful to see your hard work and creativity!”

Printable Card Activity

“Now it’s time for our next activity! I will hand out printable cards to each of you. On these cards, I want you to write down your musical interests and preferences. This could be your favourite songs, instruments, or genres! Take about five minutes to fill these out, and don’t forget to be creative!”

Distribute the printable cards and provide time for students to complete them.

Break and Physical Activity

“Alright, everyone! Let’s take a quick break from writing to move our bodies a little! We’re going to do a fun dance party! You can dance however you like. I’ll play some music—get your energy up!”

Play background music and encourage students to dance or do a simple movement game for five minutes.

Group Activity

“Now that we’re all warmed up, let’s move into our group activity! I want you to break into small groups of four or five. In your groups, take turns sharing the musical interests you wrote on your cards. Discuss what you all have in common and what makes each of you unique. I’ll give you about five minutes for this!"

Monitor the groups as they share and encourage discussion.

Collection/Checking

“Great job, everyone! Now that you’ve shared your interests, I’d like to get your printable cards back. If you could pass them up to the front as you finish sharing in your groups, that would be awesome. I’ll check them randomly to see what our classroom is interested in musically!”

Collect the cards as students finish sharing.

Assigning Homework

“Before we finish for today, I want to let you know about your homework. Please think about one musical genre you’d like to explore more. Next lesson, we’ll be diving deeper into that genre, so come prepared to share what you’ve discovered! Can’t wait to hear all about it! Thank you for your hard work today, everyone, and enjoy the rest of your day!"
