Introduction to Vocabulary for Author's Purpose
Objective
In this lesson segment, we will explore the purpose behind an author’s word choices, specifically focusing on vocabulary that serves to inform, entertain, or persuade. By the end of the session, you will be able to identify and analyze the effect of specific vocabulary choices on the author's intended message.
Lesson Plan Overview
1. Opening Discussion (10 minutes)
- Question: “What do you think the word ‘purpose’ means when it comes to writing?”
- Interactive Activity: Have students share their thoughts in pairs, then share key points with the class. This sets the stage for understanding authorial intent.
2. Vocabulary Brainstorming (15 minutes)
-
Group Activity:
- Divide students into small groups.
- Each group will brainstorm a list of 10 vocabulary words commonly used for each of the three purposes (inform, entertain, persuade).
Purpose |
Vocabulary Words |
Inform |
explain, describe, clarify, show |
Entertain |
excite, surprise, laugh, thrill |
Persuade |
convince, influence, urge, persuade |
3. Vocabulary Gallery Walk (15 minutes)
- Setup:
- Post large paper around the classroom, each labeled with one of the three purposes and a few examples of words.
- Activity:
- Students walk around in pairs, discussing the vocabulary they find on each page.
- Encourage them to connect specific words to the author’s purpose. For example, they can discuss why the word "clarify" fits the "inform" category.
4. Author's Purpose Reflection (10 minutes)
- Individual Writing:
- Ask students to choose one vocabulary word related to an author’s purpose and write a short paragraph explaining:
- What the word means.
- How the word might affect the reader.
- An example of an author or text using that word effectively.
5. Sharing and Closing (10 minutes)
-
Sharing Circle:
- Invite a few students to share their paragraphs with the class, fostering a supportive environment where peer feedback is encouraged.
-
Wrap-Up Discussion:
- Reiterate how understanding vocabulary enhances comprehension and helps to uncover an author’s intention.
- Pose the final question: "How does vocabulary influence the way we understand stories or information?"
Homework Assignment
Explore Vocabulary in Action

Additional Resources
- Books: "Words in Action" by Monica Ruiz – a resource book about effective vocabulary for various writing purposes.
- Websites: Visit Vocabulary.com to explore definitions and see these words used in sentences.
By the end of this introduction, students will recognize that the words an author chooses are key to unlocking the meaning and purpose behind a text. This will set a foundation of understanding language that they can build upon in future lessons.
