Lesson Introduction: Addition with Regrouping

Objective:

To introduce the concept of addition with regrouping in a fun and engaging way for Grade 1 students.

Hook: The Magical Candy Shop

1. Gather the Students

As the students gather on the carpet, their curiosity piqued, have a few colorful candies (or pictures of candies) in a small basket. Show them the basket and say:

"Welcome, little mathematicians! Today, we’re going to visit a Magical Candy Shop where we can mix, add, and share yummy candies! Who’s excited?"

2. Set the Scene

Begin by painting a picture of the candy shop:

"Imagine a candy shop filled with all your favorite treats! But wait! Every time we want to buy candies, we have to make sure we have enough money to pay for them. Sometimes, when we add up the candies, we find out we need to regroup them, just like when adding our money. Let’s see how it works!"

3. Interactive Story

Tell a short story involving two friends, Timmy and Lilly, who visit the magical candy shop:

"Timmy has 9 candies, and Lilly has 5 candies. They want to collect all the candies together to share with their friends. How many do they have in total? Let’s count together and see if we need to regroup!"

4. Engage with Movement

As you tell the story, encourage the students to act it out. Ask the following questions:

5. Introduce Regrouping

Once the students have counted and feel the excitement of combining candies and finding the total, introduce the idea of regrouping:

"Uh-oh! It looks like when we add 9 and 5, we need to make sure we can regroup! Sometimes, when the numbers get too big, we split them like a magician splitting candy into two bags! Let’s figure out how to do that!"

6. Transition to the Lesson

Wrap up the introduction:

"Now, let’s open our pencils and paper to learn the magical math tricks that will help us combine these candies together with regrouping! Ready, set, magic!"

In this engaging introduction, students will be motivated to explore addition with regrouping in a playful manner, using their imagination and cooperative spirit!
