Grade Level: 2

Subject: Mathematics

Duration: 30 Minutes

Objectives

By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

Materials Needed

Introduction (5 minutes)

  1. Introduction to two-digit subtraction: Start the lesson by asking students if they have ever used subtraction in real life. Discuss examples such as buying items, sharing pizza slices, or counting down days until an event.

  2. Demonstrate with an example: On the whiteboard, write the problem 54 - 23. Explain that this is a two-digit subtraction problem and how we can break it down.

Direct Instruction (10 minutes)

  1. Explain the subtraction process:

    • Step 1: Subtract the ones place first.
    • Step 2: If needed, regroup (borrow) from the tens place.
    • Step 3: Subtract the tens place.
  2. Demonstrate the example: Using the whiteboard:

    • Start with 54 - 23.
    • Explain how to subtract the ones (4 - 3 = 1).
    • Move to the tens (5 - 2 = 3).
    • Put it together: 54 - 23 = 31.

Guided Practice (10 minutes)

Independent Practice (5 minutes)

Closure (2 minutes)
