Begin our adventure into the world of politics by engaging students in a creative and imaginative way. Today, we'll be exploring how people have made decisions in communities long ago and how that affects us now!
Gather the students in a circle on the carpet. Dim the lights slightly and play some soft, mysterious music to create an adventurous atmosphere.
Present a large cardboard box decorated with stars and lights or simply use an imaginary time machine. Explain that today, we are going to hop into our time machine and travel back in time to meet important leaders from different historical periods. You might say:
"Imagine we have a magical time machine that can take us anywhere in history! Today, we will travel back in time to meet the people who helped shape the rules and decisions in their communities. What do you think these leaders looked like? What kind of decisions did they have to make?"
Encourage the students to share their ideas about different leaders in history. Write their ideas on a whiteboard or chart paper using colorful markers. Prompt with questions like:
After gathering ideas, lead the class in a 'time travel' chant, such as:
“3, 2, 1, Time Travel!”
Pretend to enter the time machine and shake it as if it is starting to move.
As the music fades, tell the students that they’ve landed in a new time period! Explain that in this lesson, we’ll be learning about how politics has shaped our world by looking at the decisions people made in the past, starting with some really important leaders!
By creating a fun and imaginative start to your history lesson on politics, students will be more engaged and excited about the content to come!
