Year 1 Mathematics Course Plan: Measurement
Course Overview
This course is designed for Year 1 students to help them understand the concept of measurement in a fun and engaging way. The focus will be on developing practical skills in measuring length, weight, and capacity using both standard and non-standard units of measurement.
ACARA Year 1 Achievement Standards
By the end of Year 1, students are expected to:
- Measure and compare the lengths and capacities of objects using informal vocabulary.
- Use appropriate instruments to measure objects.
- Sort and classify objects based on their attributes, including length, weight, and capacity.
Lesson Plan
Lesson 1: Introduction to Measurement
Objectives:
- Understand what measurement is and why it's important.
- Introduce non-standard units of measurement (e.g., hands, blocks).
Activities:
- Discuss everyday situations where measurement is used (e.g., cooking, building).
- Hands-on activity: Measure the length of classroom objects using blocks or hands.
- Reflection: Share findings as a group.
Lesson 2: Measuring Length
Objectives:
- Measure and compare the lengths of various objects using standard non-standard units.
Activities:
- Provide students with string, rulers, and measuring tapes.
- Conduct a "length scavenger hunt" where students find and measure items around the classroom.
- Record measurements on a chart for visual comparison.
Lesson 3: Comparing Lengths
Objectives:
- Compare the lengths of different objects and express relationships (e.g., longer, shorter, the same).
Activities:
- Group activity: Students will arrange objects from shortest to longest.
- Class discussion on how they determined the order (e.g., visual estimation, measurement).
- Use language of comparison effectively in conversations.
Lesson 4: Introduction to Weight
Objectives:
- Introduce the concept of weight and how to measure it using scales.
Activities:
- Explore different types of scales (kitchen scales, digital scales).
- Hands-on activity: Weigh classroom items and document their weights.
- Compare weights and discuss concepts like heavier, lighter, and equal weight.
Lesson 5: Capacity Measurement
Objectives:
- Understand what capacity means and how to measure it using standard and non-standard units.
Activities:
- Provide various containers (cups, bottles, buckets) and measuring tools (jugs).
- Conduct a water pouring activity to measure capacity and fill containers to capacity marks.
- Share results and discuss which containers hold more or less.
Lesson 6: Review and Measurement Project
Objectives:
- Review concepts learned and apply measurement skills in a project.
Activities:
- Students will select a project where they measure various items (e.g., create a “Length Book”).
- Present findings to the class; use measurement vocabulary.
- Reflection: What did they enjoy measuring the most and why?
Assessment Strategies
- Observation: Monitor students during activities to assess understanding and participation.
- Group Work: Evaluate collaboration and communication during group activities.
- Presentations: Assess understanding based on student presentations and their use of measurement vocabulary.
- Worksheets: Use measurement worksheets to assess individual knowledge and application of concepts.
Resources
- Non-standard units (blocks, hands, etc.)
- Standard measurement tools (rulers, measuring tapes, scales, jugs)
- Various objects for measurement activities (classroom items, containers, etc.)
- Worksheets for recording measurements and comparisons.
This course plan is designed to engage Year 1 students in the measurement topic by providing hands-on activities and real-life applications, aligned with the ACARA achievement standards.
