When discussing safety in the kitchen with Kindergarten students, it's important to engage them with questions that are simple, clear, and directly related to their experience. Here are three questions that can help guide the conversation in a fun and informative way.
Think about the clothes and special gear that can help protect us when we bake biscuits. Why is it important to wear an apron or a headband?
Discuss why it’s important to clean up spills right away. What happens if we don’t? How can we ask for help if we're not sure?
Encourage children to think about the oven and other hot surfaces. What can happen if we touch something hot? How can we ask for help if we see something that looks dangerous?
These questions will help children develop an understanding of kitchen safety while promoting their critical thinking skills in a fun and engaging manner. Remember to link the discussion to the Queensland Kindergarten Learning Guideline (QKLG) by encouraging cooperation and communication during the cooking activity, as well as fostering responsibility for their own safety and that of their peers.
