To ignite student interest in Metal Technology and explore its creative applications in design and fabrication.
Duration: 15-20 minutes
Materials Needed:
Engagement Through Curiosity: Begin the lesson by presenting the sealed mystery box to the class. Explain that inside the box are various metal objects that hold clues about the properties and uses of different metals in technology and design.
Group Investigation: Divide the class into small groups and give each group a few minutes to discuss and hypothesize about what could be inside the box, encouraging them to think critically about metal and its applications.
Reveal & Discovery: After the discussion, open the mystery box in front of the students, revealing the collection of metal objects. Challenge each group to identify the purpose of each item and its significance in the context of design technology.
Discussion Questions:
Connecting to the Lesson: Transition into the lesson by describing how today, students will dive deeper into metal technology, exploring its properties, processes, and making connections to real-world applications in design.
By initiating the lesson with an interactive “Metal Detective” activity, students will not only feel engaged from the start, but they will also begin to appreciate the integral role that metal plays in both technology and creative design. This engaging introduction primes them for a deeper exploration of Metal Technology throughout the lesson, setting a dynamic tone for learning.
