Grade: 5

Subject: English

Duration: 30 Minutes

Topic: Context Clues

Objective

Students will be able to use context clues to determine the meaning of unknown words in a text.

Materials Needed

Lesson Outline

Introduction (5 minutes)

  1. Hook: Begin with a question: “Have you ever come across a word that you didn’t understand while reading? What did you do?”
  2. Discussion: Allow a few students to share their responses, emphasizing strategies they used to figure out the meaning (e.g., looking at surrounding words, illustrations, etc.).
  3. Objective Statement: Explain that today, we will learn about context clues, which are hints found within a sentence or passage that help us figure out the meanings of unfamiliar words.

Direct Instruction (10 minutes)

  1. Definition: Write "Context Clues" on the board and explain that context clues are words or phrases around an unknown word that give hints about its meaning.
  2. Types of Context Clues: Introduce the four main types:
    • Definition Clues: A synonym or explanation of the word is provided.
    • Antonym Clues: An opposite word helps clarify the meaning.
    • Example Clues: Examples that illustrate the meaning of the word.
    • Inference Clues: Hints that require students to draw on background knowledge to infer meaning.
  3. Modeling: Read a sentence aloud (e.g., "The toddler was so tired that he could barely keep his eyes open; he was exhausted."). Point out how “so tired” helps explain the meaning of “exhausted.”

Guided Practice (10 minutes)

  1. Text Reading: Distribute the printed passage to each student.
  2. Group Work: Organize students into small groups and ask them to read the passage together.
  3. Context Clue Hunt: In their groups, students should locate and underline words they don’t know.
  4. Discussion: For each underlined word, students will discuss possible meanings based on context clues found in the text.
  5. Share: Have each group share one word and the context clues they discovered.

Independent Practice (5 minutes)

  1. Context Clues Worksheet: Distribute the worksheet containing sentences with underlined words.
  2. Instructions: Instruct students to use context clues in each sentence to define the underlined words.
  3. Completion: Allow students 5 minutes to complete the worksheet independently.

Conclusion (5 minutes)

  1. Review: Recap what context clues are and the types discussed.
  2. Check for Understanding: Ask students to provide an example of a sentence from the worksheet and explain the context clues that helped them derive the meanings.
  3. Exit Ticket: As students leave, ask them to write one newly learned word from today’s lesson and the context clues that helped them understand it.
