Welcome to our exciting lesson on fractions! Today, we'll explore what fractions are and how they help us share delicious treats. To kick things off, we’ll use a fun activity that involves some tasty snacks!
First, take your paper plate and imagine it’s a delicious, round pizza. Using your markers or crayons, draw toppings on half of the pizza (just for starters!). For example, you might want to draw pepperoni, mushrooms, or your favourite veggies.
Now, let’s cut the pizza into equal slices! Use your scissors to cut your paper plate into 4 equal pieces. Ask your classmates how many of these pieces you have—this is a great way to introduce the concept of fractions: each slice represents a fraction of the whole pizza!
Turn to your partner and discuss how you would share the pizza. If you only have 2 friends, how many slices does each person get? What fraction of the pizza does each person have?
Just like sharing a pizza, fractions help us understand how to divide things into equal parts. They are everywhere in our lives—whether we’re slicing up a cake, pouring juice into cups, or measuring time.
By the end of this lesson, you will not only understand what fractions are, but also how they can be represented visually and in numbers. So, let’s get started and have some fun with fractions!
Feel free to let students start drawing and cutting their pizzas right away—after a brief introduction or demonstration to spark their excitement! This hands-on approach will make learning about fractions enjoyable and memorable!
