English Lesson Introduction: Exploring Information Texts

Lesson Starter: "Mystery Box of Information!"

Objective:

To introduce Year 2 students to the concept of information texts by sparking their curiosity and engaging their imaginations.

Materials Needed:

Activity Steps:

  1. Set the Scene:

    • Gather the students in a circle on the carpet.
    • Place the mystery box at the centre of the circle.
  2. The Tease:

    • Explain to the students that today they are going to dive into the exciting world of information texts—the type of writing that helps us learn about different things!
    • Spark their curiosity by saying, "But first, we have a mystery to solve!"
  3. Reveal the Mystery Box:

    • Encourage students to guess what is inside the box.
    • After a few guesses, open the box slowly to reveal one object at a time.
  4. Guess and Discuss:

    • As each item comes out, ask the students:
      • What is this?
      • What can we learn about it?
    • For instance:
      • If you pull out a globe: "What countries do you see? What might we learn about them?"
      • If you pull out a plant: "How do plants grow? What do they need to survive?"
  5. Connecting to Information Texts:

    • After discussing each item, explain to students that information texts are like "treasure maps" that help us discover facts about the world around us.
    • Write the name of the object on the whiteboard and a few things they learned about it. For example, "Globe: Countries, Oceans, Continents".
  6. Transition to the Lesson:

    • Conclude by saying, "Today, we're going to learn how to read and create our own information texts just like treasure hunters who find and share amazing facts!"

Wrap-Up:

This engaging introduction encourages curiosity and participation while aligning with Year 2 learning goals in English. Happy teaching!
