Today, we will embark on an exciting journey into the wilderness through the book My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George. By the end of this lesson, you will develop an understanding of the main character's motivations and the challenges he faces in the wild.
Let's gather in small groups of 4-5 students. Imagine that you have just run away from home like Sam Gribley in the book. To survive in the wilderness, what three items would you take with you? Discuss and write down your ideas with your group.
Each group will have 2 minutes to share their chosen items with the class. As you listen to your classmates, think about the similarities and differences in your survival strategies.
Now, let's turn our ideas into a fun challenge! Individually, imagine you’re out in the woods with the three items you selected. You will have 10 minutes to sketch your ideal campsite, including the three items. Be creative! Consider where you would place your shelter, how you would gather food and water, and how you would keep safe.
Once everyone has finished their sketches, we will do a gallery walk. Display your sketches around the room, and as you walk around, take notes on at least three other students' ideas that inspire your survival strategy.
We'll come back together to discuss what we learned from each other’s ideas and how similar or different they are from Sam's choices in My Side of the Mountain. This will set the stage for our book study, where we dive into Sam's journey of survival, exploration, and self-discovery.
For our next lesson, read the first chapter of My Side of the Mountain and be prepared to discuss Sam's experiences as he begins his adventure.
With this engaging introduction, you'll pique students' interest in the book and its themes, setting a collaborative atmosphere for exploring My Side of the Mountain.
