Lesson Plan: Number Pairs That Add Up to 10

Subject: Mathematics
Topic: Number Pairs Add Up to 10
Grade Level: Reception / Kindergarten
Duration: 30 minutes

Objectives

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

Materials Needed

Introduction (5 minutes)

Begin the lesson by gathering the students in a circle. Hold up the large poster board with the number 10 written on it.

Explain that today they will learn about number pairs that add up to 10. Show a few different combinations of blocks (e.g., 1 block and 9 blocks, 2 blocks and 8 blocks, etc.) to introduce the idea of pairs.

Direct Instruction (10 minutes)

  1. Demonstration using Blocks:

    • Divide students into pairs and give each pair 10 blocks.
    • Ask them to find different pairs of numbers that make 10 combining their blocks. For example, one student can use 3 blocks, and the other will use 7 blocks.
  2. Recording Results:

    • As they find pairs, write the combinations on the whiteboard:
      • 0 + 10
      • 1 + 9
      • 2 + 8
      • 3 + 7
      • 4 + 6
      • 5 + 5
    • Discuss each pair and how they add up to 10, making sure to emphasize that addition is like putting together two groups to find out how many there are in total.

Guided Practice (10 minutes)

Using the blocks, call out a number between 1 and 9. Have students create that number of blocks and then determine how many more they need to reach 10. For example, if you call out 4, they will use 4 blocks and need to find 6 more blocks (4 + 6 = 10).

Independent Practice (5 minutes)

Distribute the worksheet with number pairs that add up to 10. Students will need to fill in the missing number for pairs that add up to 10 (for instance, ___ + 6 = 10).

As students work, circulate the room to provide support or challenge them with additional pairs if they finish early.

Closure (5 minutes)

Wrap up the lesson by revisiting the number 10 chart on the board. Ask a few students to come up and share their favorite pair of numbers that add up to 10. Reinforce the learning by asking what they liked about the activity.

Homework

Task:

  1. Complete the following problems by writing the missing number that completes the pair to 10:

    • ___ + 2 = 10
    • 7 + ___ = 10
    • ___ + 4 = 10
    • 9 + ___ = 10
  2. Draw a picture showing one of the pairs that add up to 10 using your favorite objects or animals.

Correct Answers:

  1. 8
  2. 3
  3. 6
  4. 1

Closing Statement

Thank students for their participation and remind them that learning about number pairs helps us understand addition, which is very important in math!
