Setup:
- Materials Needed:
- Slips of paper
- A box or container
- Timer
Instructions:
-
Prepare for the Activity:
- Prior to the lesson, write down a variety of important topics on slips of paper. These can include current events, social issues, ethical dilemmas, environmental concerns, etc. Examples might include:
- Climate Change
- Social Media's Impact on Mental Health
- Equality and Diversity
- The Role of Technology in Education
-
Engage Students:
- Begin the class by asking students to sit in a circle.
- Explain that today’s lesson will focus on speaking about important topics.
- Tell them they’ll participate in an activity called “The Silent Debate” which will serve as a warm-up to brainstorm ideas for their discussions later in the lesson.
-
Introduce the Silent Debate:
- Hand out a slip of paper to each student or allow them to choose one from the box.
- Tell them that for the next five minutes, they need to write down their thoughts about the topic on their slip of paper. They can note down any ideas, opinions, or questions they have regarding the topic without discussing them verbally.
-
Sharing Insights:
- After the time is up, instruct the students to pass their slip to the person on their right.
- Each student now has a new slip and has one minute to read it. They should think about what they can contribute to that topic or what questions arise from reading it.
- Repeat this process for two or three rounds, allowing students to think critically about various important topics.
-
Discussion Starter:
- After completing the Silent Debate, bring the group back together for an open discussion.
- Ask the students to share their thoughts on:
- What topic intrigued them the most and why.
- If they had a chance to speak on any topic from the activity, which one would it be and what key points would they focus on?
