Welcome, Year 2 students! Today, we are going to embark on a fun adventure into the world of counting by tens. It’s time to grab our imaginations and explore how counting can be exciting and colourful!
Before we jump into our counting, let’s imagine a magical forest filled with friendly animals. Each animal has a special way of counting! There are 10 kangaroos, 10 koalas, and 10 emus hopping around, having a great time counting together.
As we enter this bustling forest, we see our friends gathered around a big sign that says, "Let’s count in tens!" The animals are hopping around in groups of 10, and they need our help to keep track of how many there are in total!
Gather the Animals: Have students form groups and take turns picking 10 animal figurines from a bag. Each group will represent a type of animal.
Count Together: Once each group has 10 animals, let’s all stand up and count them together. Can we all say "1, 2, 3... 10" in a big loud voice together?
Fill the Counting Chart: Now, let’s fill in our counting chart! For every 10 animals we have, we will put a big circle on the chart to represent our counting.
Draw Your Animal: After counting, each student can draw their favourite animal from the forest and decorate it using coloured markers.
To wrap up our lesson, let’s take a moment to think about how we counted in tens today! Counting in tens helps us add up big groups quickly, just like counting all the kangaroos hopping together.
Let’s continue our journey of counting together by discovering new ways to use our counting skills in the world around us! Remember, counting in tens makes learning fun! 🌟
