Lesson Introduction: Fun with Money!
Objective
Today's lesson will explore the exciting world of money! We will learn about different coins and notes, their values, and how to use them to buy things.
Hook Activity: "The Magical Money Box"
Materials Needed:
- A small, decorative box (this will be our "Magical Money Box")
- Real or toy coins and notes (pennies, 5p, 10p, 20p, £1, £5, etc.)
- A few small items (like a toy, pencil, or sweet treat with price tags)
Steps:
-
Introduction to the Magical Money Box:
- Start the lesson by showing the class the "Magical Money Box." Tell them that today, this box will help us understand how we can use money to buy things!
-
Mystery Money Challenge:
- Invite a few students to come up and take turns choosing an item from your selection (the toy, pencil, or sweet treat). Each item should have a price tag.
- Ask the student to guess how much money they would need to buy the item before revealing its price. This will spark curiosity!
-
Exploration:
- Once the price is revealed, pull out the coins and notes from the Magical Money Box that match that amount. Discuss the different denominations and how they add up to the total.
-
Engagement:
- Encourage all students to participate by asking questions such as:
- "What coins can we use to reach £1?"
- "If I have £2 and I want to buy something that costs £1.50, how much change will I get back?"
Conclusion of the Activity:
- Wrap up this portion of the lesson by explaining that just like we used different coins to make a total, we will be learning more about counting money and making exchanges today!
