Creative Lesson Introduction: The Art of Improvisation in Drama

Introduction

Welcome to today’s lesson on Improvisation! Improvisation is not just a skill for actors, but a tool for self-expression and creativity. It encourages spontaneity, quick thinking, and collaboration with others. To kick off our exploration of improvisation, we will engage in a unique warm-up activity that will set the stage for our learning today.

Activity: "The Improv Elevator"

Objective

To get your creative juices flowing, warm up your improvisational skills, and build team dynamics.

Duration

15 minutes

Setup

  1. Gather the Class: Arrange the students in a circle, either seated or standing.
  2. Explain the Concept: Tell the students they will be taking on a new character each time the "elevator doors" open. They must create a scene based on their character's occupation, emotions, and storyline.

Instructions

  1. Elevator Scenario: Describe an imaginary elevator with multiple floors. Explain that each floor represents a different scenario (e.g., a wedding, a doctor’s office, a café, etc.).
  2. Doors Open & Close: As the facilitator, you will simulate the sound of elevator doors opening and closing. When the doors open, students have 10 seconds to establish their character and their surroundings.
  3. Create the Scene: When the doors close, the students will freeze their positions and voice their characters’ last line. When the doors open again, they must switch into a completely new character in a new scenario.
  4. Encourage Creativity: Remind the students to play with emotions and relationships in each scene. There are no failures in improv—just opportunities to explore!
