Subject

Art

Grade Level

2nd Grade

Duration

30 Minutes

Objectives

By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

  1. Identify the five basic elements of art: line, shape, color, texture, and space.
  2. Create a simple artwork that incorporates all five elements.

Materials Needed

Introduction (5 Minutes)

  1. Begin the lesson by gathering the students in a circle.
  2. Introduce the topic of the day: Elements of Art. Explain that these are the building blocks for creating artwork.
  3. Show examples of artwork and point out the different elements as you discuss each one.

Direct Instruction (10 Minutes)

  1. Line: Explain that lines can be straight, curved, thick, or thin. Show examples of different types of lines.
  2. Shape: Describe shapes as a flat area created by lines. Discuss basic shapes (circle, square, triangle).
  3. Color: Introduce the concept of color. Discuss primary colors, secondary colors, and how colors can express feelings.
  4. Texture: Explain texture as how something feels or looks like it feels (smooth, rough). Show examples to illustrate.
  5. Space: Talk about space in art, including foreground and background. Use simple diagrams to show the difference.

Guided Practice (5 Minutes)

  1. Lead the students in a short, collaborative activity.
  2. Ask them to identify lines, shapes, colors, textures, and space in a piece of displayed artwork.
  3. Encourage students to share their observations with the class.

Independent Practice (5 Minutes)

  1. Provide each student with a piece of white drawing paper and their choice of coloring tools.
  2. Instruct students to create their own artwork using all five elements of art discussed.
  3. Encourage creativity – students can draw anything they like but must include examples of each element.

Conclusion (5 Minutes)

  1. Have students share their artwork with a partner and describe how they used each of the elements of art.
  2. Discuss as a group how the elements helped make their artwork unique.
  3. Review the key points of the lesson: What are the elements of art and why are they important in creating art.
